In the past 6 months there has been a lot of focus in our county on the homeless people who erected tent cities because they felt they had no other options or resources. We give thanks to the city and other organizations who provided individuals with temporary housing vouchers. Yet every night in our county 4,800 people lack a place to sleep.
ASAP continues to provide emergency housing to single women, women with children, men with children, and families. These services are provided unconditionally to whomever needs them, including shelter, food, clothing, personal hygiene items and many other services as needed. In the Drop-In Center Monday through Friday ASAP provides 50 to 70 homeless men and women daily with showers, clean clothing, and nourishment.
In fiscal year 2005/6 our emergency shelter served 329 individuals ranging in age from birth to 70 years (the majority being children). In fiscal year 2005/6 the Drop-In Center served 862 individuals.
Today ASAP’s future looks dim because our grant funding may be cut considerably or be cut altogether. Sixty percent of our funding comes from city and county grants; 40 percent comes from foundations, donors, churches, and supporters. In order for ASAP to maintain and keep its doors open we are depending on our supporters who have been here from the very beginning and on new sponsors who recognize the critical need to help the homeless.
My heartfelt thanks to you who continue to support this great cause. I am now in my third year as Executive Director of ASAP Homeless Services and I will continue to give you more than 100% of my time because our people are worth it!
Sincerely,
Karen Butler
Executive Director
Hello, and thank you for visiting our website! ASAP Homeless Services, Inc. has been a part of the social service tapestry of St. Petersburg for over twenty-five years now. ASAP started as a shelter for homeless women with young children in a rented boarding house. That mission soon grew to provide showers and a clean change of clothes to men and women who had no shelter and who lived in our City's streets. In recent years our mission has grown to shelter entire families with children of all ages. Our housing is provided on an emergency basis, meaning that we typically limit stays at our shelter to thirty to sixty days. ASAP is a non-profit, non-denominational, grass roots, local organization. Our board members are St. Petersburg residents. We operate with a small staff on a shoestring budget and yet manage to serve many hundreds of our unfortunate neighbors. We are funded by a combination of small and large donations from individuals, church and civic groups, and public funds from the City of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County and the federal government. To all who have contributed, and on behalf of all who have received, I sincerely thank you.
I invite you to visit our shelters and meet us, and the people whom we serve, and consider how the lives of the people we serve have been dignified and uplifted through the work of ASAP's volunteers and staff, using your kind donations. The remarkable work of the people who work at ASAP, and at all the other social agencies throughout St. Petersburg, upholds and uplifts our entire City. Thank you for visiting our website, and thank you for your support. I invite you to contact us, visit us and get involved in this wonderful project we call ASAP Homeless Services, Inc.
Anthony J. Russo,
President, Board of Directors.
